In this article, we’ll explain more about the standard bed sizes.
6 Standard Bed Sizes
Most mattress companies offer mattresses in 6 different sizes, which are easily accessible in most markets. When comparing mattress sizes, it’s important to understand the dimensions of each one. We’ll take a closer look at each one below, starting with the smallest.
Twin
Twin-size mattresses are 38” by 75” and the recommended room size is 7’ by 10’. This is the smallest standard size on the market. It is ideal for children and single people- but it is important to note that a twin-size mattress may not be ideal for adults, due to the size.
Twin XL
A twin XL-size mattress is 38” by 80”, which is 5” longer than a standard twin-size mattress, and the recommended room size is 9.6’ by 10.6’. A twin XL mattress is ideal for teens and makes a great guest bed- but can only accommodate one person.
Full
A full-size mattress is 54” by 75”, and the recommended room size is 9.6’ by 10.6’. This size mattress is also referred to as a double bed. It is a popular option behind queen size. While smaller than a standard queen mattress, it can still accommodate two adults. Still, it may not be the best option for adults because it doesn’t leave much extra space. This can be an ideal size for singles, as it gives them extra space to stretch out.
Queen
A queen-size mattress is 60” by 80”, and the recommended room size is 10’ by 10’. It is 16” smaller than a king-size but is still a good size for a couple or for a single person with a pet or a child. It is also a good option for the guest room, as it can easily accommodate more than one adult. Queen mattresses are available in a split form, which provides more privacy if needed.
King
A king-size mattress is 76” by 80”- which is 4” wider and shorter than a California King, and the recommended room size is 12’ by 12’. This mattress is large enough to accommodate two adults and two children or pets.
California King
A California King is 72” by 84”, and the recommended room size is 12’ by 12’. This size mattress can easily accommodate two adults and a child or pet, making it ideal for families. The length of this mattress is ideal for taller people.
Other Sizes
You may also encounter other mattress sizes, including:
- Olympic Queen
- Full XL
- Small Single
- Crib
However, these are not typically readily available in stores and must be special ordered.
Tips for Choosing the Right Size
When choosing a mattress, there are several things to keep in mind when choosing the right size:
- Occupancy: how many people will be sleeping in the bed on a regular basis?
- Usage: who is sleeping on the mattress?
- Price: what is your budget- how much are you willing to spend on a mattress?
- Room size: what size is the room you are planning to put the mattress in?
- Comfort: the softness/firmness matters when it comes to comfort- but the available space is also a factor.
